What was Martia saying that she shouldn't?
A personal finance assistant has to talk only about what's actually on your account. In one reply, Martia described a counterparty with a full street address and an industry classification — none of which was in your transactions database. The model filled it in from general knowledge, the way a generic AI assistant would. For a financial product, that's not acceptable: it undermines trust in every number that comes after.
The second mistake was labeling things “monthly” too eagerly. Martia could take two invoices — a deposit (Pro Forma) and its final settlement (VAT) — average them, and present the result as a fixed monthly cost. That isn't a recurring charge; it's the same expense counted twice. That kind of “fixed cost” gave a false picture of the household budget.
What changed in the AI assistant?
Martia now follows a hard rule: when a transaction names a company she hasn't heard about earlier in the conversation, she asks you what it is — instead of guessing it's rent, materials, or a subcontractor. Addresses, tax IDs, and industry guesses don't appear in answers as facts, even when the bank glues them onto the recipient's name in GoCardless data.
The word “monthly” only shows up when the last three months contain at least three payments to the same recipient, with amounts in a sensible range. Pro forma invoices, deposits, and settlements are no longer summed as a separate expense. When you ask “how much do I spend monthly on X?”, you get either a real answer grounded in transactions, or Martia saying clearly there isn't enough data to call it monthly yet.
